Luke “Fu-Luki” Clayton

Luke was born in Grahamstown in 1986. At the age of 5 he found a vinyl of Very ‘eavy Very ‘umble by Uriah Heap. With some fumbling, he figured out how to use a record player. This sparked an urge for him to play guitar. During the years of learning to play the guitar, Luke drew influence from The Blues and artists such as The Police, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and The Eagles. He got his first guitar when he was 9 and his first electric guitar when we was 12. In his teen years Luke found himself interested in the genres of Punk Rock, Funk and Reggae including bands such as The Offspring and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. At the age of 17 he joined his first Rock band and got a taste for playing on a live stage. Since then his strong passion for this form of entertainment has caused him not to be without a group of performing musicians for more than a month.

Luke studied to attain a Bachelor of Music Degree at Rhodes University between 2006 and 2010. Whilst studying at this particular institution he played in bands such as 10 Points for The Dismount, Psalm87 and The Players and Undone. During this time Luke studied Jazz and Latin music whilst also taking a large interest in Progressive Rock, mainly drawing influence from The Mars Volta and The Rx Bandits. When Lu-Fuki advertised their need for a guitarist Luke gave them a call and an audition was set up. He was required to learn Under The Bridge by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The group played through the song once after which Luke asked, “so, who else has auditioned for you guys?” Slambo Steve replied.” Um... well you’re the only one really, do you want to be in our band?” To which Luke readily accepted.

Fu-Luki plays a PRS SE Custom, with a Peavey Reknown 212 amp. He uses a homemade distortion pedal, cry baby wah, digitech whammy and a digitech delay. His intricate attention to melodic and rhythmic detail creates the natural harmonic flow that one can hear in Lu-Fuki’s music.
